The wind energy sector in Spain : A key sector to the energy transition
October 5th
A few years ago, Spain decided to develop renewable energies to decarbonise its economy and achieve its environmental objectives. Wind power is the most important energy source in Spain in 2021, ahead of nuclear power. Numerous incentive policies are being implemented to develop renewable energies and in particular wind power in order to meet the country’s environmental compliance targets.
According to data from Red Eléctrica de España, 46.7% of the energy produced in Spain in 2021 was of renewable origin. In comparison, only three decades ago, the contribution of these technologies was 20.1%.
To give some key figures, Spain is the 8th country in the world in terms of total renewable energy production capacity. In 2021, green energies produced 121,305 gigawatts per hour (GWh), 9.7% more than in 2020. The country is at the forefront of wind energy production, which accounts for 23.3% of the country’s energy mix. Between 2020 and 2021 this energy production has increased by 10%.
The wind is blowing in favour of the renewable energy sector, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicting that green production will continue to gain ground in Spain, growing by 7% annually between this year and 2024. Moreover, the most optimistic forecasts estimate that renewable energies will reach a 90% share of the energy mix by 2050.
